Learn How to Troubleshoot Some Common Radiator Issues

Having car problems can be extremely frustrating, especially when it comes to overheating issues. Your radiator plays a critical role in keeping your engine at the proper operating temperature, so when it starts to fail, you’ll notice pretty quickly. Check Coolant Levels

The most common cause of overheating is simply being low on coolant, also called antifreeze. Pop the hood when the engine is cold and locate the coolant reservoir, which is usually made of translucent plastic. There will be indicator lines etched onto the tank showing the proper fill levels. If your coolant is low, top it off with the factory-recommended mixture.

Inspect Hoses

After verifying coolant levels, take a close look at all the radiator hoses. Carefully squeeze along the length of each one, looking for any spongy or swollen spots that indicate a leak. Also, check places where the hoses connect to the radiator to see if there is any wetness. If you locate any leaks, try tightening the connections first to see if that stops the drip. Check Fan Operation

An engine’s cooling system depends heavily on airflow when the car is sitting still. Fans are designed to automatically switch on when the engine gets above a set temperature. Test functionality by letting the car idle for 10 to 15 minutes with the A/C off, then pop the hood to see if the fan has activated. If it hasn’t, the fan switch is likely malfunctioning.

Flush the Radiator

Over years of use, scale deposits and rust particles can build up inside the radiator and block the flow of coolant, reducing its ability to regulate temperature. Every couple of years, it’s a good idea to flush the system with a garden hose using moderate water pressure aimed down into the radiator fill port once you’ve drained all the old fluid. Check the Radiator Cap

Don’t underestimate the importance of a properly sealing radiator cap. As engines heat up, the coolant expands, and the cap is designed to hold that pressurization in the cooling system. A bad cap that fails to maintain the intended pressure levels will cause fluid to boil over or leak out. Test the integrity of the radiator cap seal by using a penny to push down one side of the cap. If it depresses at all, replace it with a new one right away.

Know When To See A Mechanic

While many overheating issues come down to simple maintenance or minor parts that can be user-replaced, if you’ve worked through all the DIY troubleshooting tips without resolving the problem, it’s best to then have a professional mechanic inspect things.
